We have our cork underlayment available in three different thicknesses – 3mm or 6mm or 12mm. Cork is the thick, light weight, elastic outer bark of the cork oak tree. The bark naturally splits every 9 to 15 years and can be safely harvested without causing harm to the tree. Cork is naturally hypoallergenic and is resistant to mold and mildew.

In cold areas, most of our clients like to work with the 6mm cork underlay. This, plus Forna floating cork flooring, can raise the temperature in the basement by as much as 7 Celsius (13 fahrenheit) without turning up the heat. In fact, many people find they turn down the heat once cork floating flooring with 6mm cork underlayment has been installed. All of our clients who have worked with the Forna 6mm underlayment have been EXTREMELY pleased with the cushion, the thermal insulation and the acoustic insulation (the basement gets VERY quiet once cork is installed).

We carry cork underlay with the highest density rating possible: 200-220kg/cubic meter, which is the highest in the business. Most business carry 180 kg/cubic meter

3mm quality cork underlay $0.29/sqft

6mm quality cork underlay $0.59/sqft

12mm cork underlayment $1.19/sqft

The 12mm cork underlay will offer a Delta IIC rating of 22 dB. This is EXTREMELY high. The only thing that will compare = SOLID rubber. Rubber (solid black rubber underlay) is the closest you will get. The ratio of cork: rubber is 3:2. That means 8mm rubber will equal 12mm cork. To find this thickness in rubber is EXTREMELY difficult. A rubber underlay of this thickness = $5-$8/sf. Most “vinyl specific underlay” is around 2mm thick (some are 1.8mm...others are 1.2mm). These will NOT be equal to 12mm cork.

Cork has an R-value (per cubic inch) of 3.12.

Cork is widely used for sound reduction in buildings. It is an ecological, economical and effective way to meet building codes for sound control. Cork underlay can be used under tile, marble, laminate, cork and hardwood floors. Our 6mm is just .69 a square foot. Order your samples today at icorkfloor.com.

In a nutshell:

Our 3mm cork will “add” 13 dB to any floor (that’s STC or IIC ratings)

Our 6mm Cork Underlay will add 27 dB to any flooring system (that’s STC or IIC)

Our competitor’s 11mm Floating Floor (same specs as ours) adds 14 dB (STC or IIC)

If you use a 6mm underlay (27 dB), over 8inch cement subfloor(31 dB) with 11mm cork floating flooring (14 dB) you will achieve a sound rating of STC 72 and IIC of 74 dB. No carpet + carpet underlay can come anywhere near a 72 db!!!
